Iron sided M1847 Dragoon bit
Iron sided M1847 Dragoon bit
One of the very first Grimsley bits that I added to the collection. As described in Dorseys: "American Military Saddles", the 1847 Grimsley bit. A bit of a different button or fastening enlargement is present that differs from other 1847 bits. This most likely had brass facing at one time but none remains. Note the clean arch of the original lip bar. It also has all four orignal rein rings.

About 80% of the gold remains. The original museum tag remains which identified the bit to James W. Hervey, US Cavalry 1st LT, Co A 2nd Mass. Cavalry 1862 - 1864.
