Porto Rico Campaign Uniform Tunic and Hat
Porto Rico Campaign Uniform Tunic and Hat
Extra nice uniform/hat set directly identified to a US Volunteer Infantryman soldier who served in the Porto Rico Campaign of the Spanish American War. The tunic is the tan but sun faded 1st pattern M1898 l with blue volunteer shoulder eps, pockets and cuffs. The blue areas are not the typical wool but are cotton duck material so there is no mothing present. The original waste belt is included with it's two buttons. All uniform buttons are present except the two small ones at the collar. There are no repairs or stains on the uniform and considering it's service it is very nice. The soldier's name 'HL Timker" is written within the tunic. The bonus piece of this set is the M1889 issue hat which I call a "diary" hat that is a collectable piece by itself. The leather sweat band is long gone as is the ribbon, note that the soldier has made air vent holes to relieve heat in the humid Porto Rico summer of 1898. The early 1898 white Infantry hat band is still on the hat. Written on the hat are the following; Puerto- Rico-Americano, 1898, Charleston, Ponce, Juana Dia X, Guyana, Coamo " and a few other cities or villages that are difficult to read. It should not be too difficult to determine the soldier's Regiment. Not to remain out done by his fellow tent mates, Timker has added a red metal chew tobacco tag to his hat "Lorillard's Tobacco Plug CLIMAX". Not pictured but to be part of the set is the original storage box with Timker's 1898 Contract marked leggings. Written on the lid of the box; "My Dad's Army Uniform Spanish American War, 1898" Without question a true combat used uniform and hat.

M1889 US Army Issue Barracks Shoes
M1889 US Army Issue Barracks Shoes
Excellent and extremely hard to find M1889 Issue Barracks Shoes for the 1890s and into the Spanish American War period. Exactly as described in the 1889 Equipment Specifications. This pair is marked 8 on the sole, while there is only one insole it is very nicely contract marked, inspected and dated 1899. One insole is missing. The shoes are made of a dyed cotton duck. The laces are current made but are meant to be a facsimile of the "heavy iron laces" that were the issue model. The leather soles are unblemished as are the heals. All exterior top leather areas are very nice, with the exception that one toe area has lost the bright sheen. Any contract footwear is impossible to find.

M1889 Campaign "Diary" hat
M1889 Campaign "Diary" hat
Nicely documented Soldiers hat of the Spanish American War. " W. Carroll; Company C 69th New York Volunteer Infantry 1898" written on the sweat band. This unit was noted as having been in a serious Train accident that left several members dead. That fact is documented on the hat. A nice hat to start with, 3 rows of stitching and haviang an original 3rd Army Corps badge attached. The hat's diary has the following information on it. " May 2 reached Camp Black, left May22. May27 reached Chickamauga left June 4. June 9 reached Tampa, left July 24. July 25 Reached Fernandina , left August 26". (While enroute to Huntsville on the 27th five cars of the train left the track) "WRECK Between Birmingham Decatur August 28, 98. 3 killed, 28 injured". Drawings of soldier life and flags on the crown of the hat. Just a few minor tears, complete sweat band, complete silk ribbon intact. . A wonderful Spanish American War piece.
